| In the late 1990’s, Mike Maggart, a high school math teacher at a top private school in the U.S., was working in the evenings as a private tutor – visiting students from house to house to help with their homework and test preparations.
Mr. Maggart was frustrated by the inefficiency of the process (he was essentially “rewinding” himself and teaching the same lessons over and over), and no matter how much help he was able to give to his students, there weren't enough hours in the day to help everyone. Because of this need, he began to think about better ways of delivering math instruction.
In the summer of 1998, Mr. Maggart visited a multimedia software company that was developing programs using interactive video and audio technology, and he realized that this was a platform that could provide a high-quality math teacher for every student on-demand.
Mr. Maggart soon developed a series of instructor-based Algebra 1 lessons on CD-ROM, and piloted the program with his students that fall. It didn’t take long before they were hooked on the idea of having their own teacher at their control!
Encouraged by the response from his students, Mr. Maggart then developed a complete Algebra 1 course. In January of 2000, he and a business partner, Charles Hermes, founded the company that was to become YourTeacher.com.
Nearly seven years later, YourTeacher.com offers over 450 lessons covering Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, and has a customer base of hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of students throughout the world.
On November 1st, 2006, YourTeacher.com launched its online lessons for individuals for the first time. This new offering has revolutionized YourTeacher.com’s ability to fulfill Mr. Maggart’s original dream of providing a high-quality math teacher for every student on-demand.
Yourteacher.com’s world-class curriculum is based on Mr. Maggart’s many years of experience teaching at one of the nation’s best private schools, so that all students can enjoy the benefits of receiving the best possible education in math. |
