Algebra 1: Lesson 108

Functions
Recognizing and Evaluating Functions

Lesson Description

Students learn that a function is a relation in which each x-value corresponds to exactly one y-value. For example, the following relation, {(1, 0), (2, 3), (4, 7), (2, 9), and (1, 13)}, is not a function, because there is an x-value, 2, that corresponds to two different y-values, 3, and 9. Students also learn to use the vertical line test to determine whether a given graph represents a function. The vertical line test states that if a given graph is a function, then any vertical line that is drawn on the graph should intersect the graph at no more than one point.
