Two-Step Equations

Lesson Description

Students learn to solve equations in which the variable term has a coefficient other than 1. To solve the equations in this lesson, the first step is to isolate the term that contains the variable on one side of the equation, and the second step is to change the coefficient of the variable term to a 1. For example, in the equation 3x + 5 = 11, the first step is to subtract 5 from both sides of the equation to isolate the term that contains the variable, to get 3x = 6. Next, since x is being multiplied by 3, divide both sides by 3 to get x = 2.
