Function and Arrow Notation

Lesson Description

Students learn that f(x) = 5x + 1 is an example of function notation, and is read "f of x equals 5x + 1" or "the value of the function at x is 5x + 1". And if f(x) = 5x + 1, then f(2) = 5(2) + 1, or f(2) = 11. Students also learn that f: x à 10 - x is an example of arrow notation, and is read "the function f that pairs x with 10 - x". Note that arrow notation means the same thing as function notation, so if we’re given f: x à 10 - x, then f(-3) = 10 - (-3) or f(-3) = 13.
