Pre-Algebra: Lesson 020

Integers and The Number Line
Opposites and Absolute Value

Lesson Description

Students learn that the opposite of an integer is the same distance from zero on the number line as the original integer, but on the opposite side of zero. For example, the opposite of +5 is -5, and the opposite of -5 is +5. Note that the opposite of a positive integer is a negative integer, and the opposite of a negative integer is a positive integer. The absolute value of an integer is its distance from zero on a number line. For example, the absolute value of -8 is +8, because -8 is 8 units from zero on the number line. Note that the absolute value of any positive or negative integer is positive.
