Pre-Algebra: Lesson 121

Congruent and Similar Figures
Similar Figures

Lesson Description

Students learn that similar figures are figures that have the same shape but not necessarily the same size. Therefore, the corresponding angles of similar figures are congruent, but the corresponding sides of similar figures are not necessarily congruent. However, the ratios of the lengths of corresponding sides of similar figures are equal. For example, if triangle ABC is similar to triangle DEF, then AB/DE = BC/EF = AC/DF. In the problems in this lesson, students are asked to determine if given polygons are congruent, similar, or neither, as well as answer questions about corresponding parts of similar figures.
