Multi-Step Equations
Equations with the Variable on Both Sides
Equations with the Variable on Both Sides
Lesson Description
Students learn to solve equations with the variable on both sides. For example, to solve 3n + 11 = 1 - 2n, first put the variable terms together on one side of the equation by adding 2n to both sides, to get 5n + 11 = 1. Next, put the numbers together on the other side of the equation by subtracting 11 from both sides, to get 5n = -10. Finally, divide both sides by 5, to get n = -2. Note that students check all solutions by substituting the solution back in for the variables in the original equation.
