Pre-Algebra: Lesson 087

Multi-Step Equations
Modeling Two-Step Equations

Lesson Description

Students learn to write a sentence as an equation. For example, "Twice a number increased by 5 is 21" can be written as 2n + 5 = 21. Next, solve the equation by subtracting 5 from both sides, to get 2n = 16, then divide both sides by 2, to get n = 8. Note that students check all solutions by substituting the solution back in for the variable or variables in the original equation.
